Access to the via ferrata is straightforward and well-marked. If coming from Sokolac, turn left after 12.5 kilometers, while from Sarajevo, you need to turn right after 30 kilometers on the M-19 main road. After the turn, the road passes by the Sokolica Monastery, located on the left side, 1.7 kilometers from the turn – location
Continue for another 2.8 kilometers until you reach the paved road that leads to the Crvene Stijene Mountain Hut (1365 meters above sea level).
Via ferrata “Sokolov put” is located in the Crvene Stijene area, above the Sarajevo-Romanija region. This new attraction offers excitement for mountaineering and adrenaline lovers. Rated B/C in difficulty, it is perfect for recreational hikers with basic via ferrata experience, but still offers enough challenges for seasoned adventurers.
The highlight of the ferrata is the two suspension bridges, totaling about 350 meters in length, which provide an unparalleled sense of height and freedom. The ferrata is well-built and secure – the cables and grips are firmly set, with additional safety measures that inspire confidence while climbing. The entire route leads through impressive rock formations and forests, leaving a strong impression on every visitor. Without a doubt, “Sokolov put” is a destination worth experiencing for its views, challenges, and the perfect blend of nature and adrenaline.
The path to the ferrata begins with a short walk along a gravel road, about 150 meters in length. Right from the start, the peace and quiet of the mountain fill your senses. Shortly after, the marked trail turns right and takes you into the cool shade of a dense pine forest, where the crunch of needles underfoot and the fresh scent of resin in the air create the perfect atmosphere for the adventure to begin.
The trail then gently descends, and after about ten minutes of walking, you reach a fork where you must turn right again. This marks the real beginning of the adventure. A few more minutes of walking through a natural pine tunnel, and you will be greeted by the towering rocks – the silent guardians of the region. At their base, you’ll find the starting point of the ferrata, where the vertical story begins, written with steel, stone, and adrenaline.
The ferrata immediately provides a rush of adrenaline – the first climb is almost completely vertical, around 30 meters high. After that, the trail gently turns left into a short horizontal section that leads to the right, then climbs again, this time with a shorter but still challenging vertical of about 20 meters.
This section leads to a spacious plateau – the perfect spot for a break. Here, you’ll find benches where you can sit, relax, and enjoy the stunning view of the surrounding mountain peaks and forested landscapes.
For those who feel unsure about continuing, there is a marked trail from this plateau that leads safely back through the forest.
After the plateau, the climb continues with a gentle traverse to the right, lasting about 15 minutes. This section runs along a steep slope, but the terrain is clear and interesting, making it easy to pass.
Next comes the most exciting and attractive part of the ferrata – crossing two suspension bridges that leave a lasting impression. The first is the “monkey bridge” – it consists of a single cable to walk on, with two additional cables on the sides for support and safety. Although it seems challenging, it is well-secured, and crossing it is thrilling yet safe.
After crossing, there is a short vertical ascent that leads directly to the second bridge – the “ladder bridge.” This one is more stable and easier to cross, providing relief after the previous challenge.
The final challenge is the last vertical climb, about 30 meters high, which leads to the top of the Crvene Stijene, at an altitude of 1423 meters.
From the summit, there is a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, forests, and valleys – the perfect moment for a pause, photography, and enjoying the well-deserved sense of achievement.
The ferrata is excellently constructed and offers an unforgettable experience through the Crvene Stijene. The installations are perfectly set, ensuring security throughout the climb. Every step provides a reliable grip or foothold, and there are no issues with stability.
There are a few gentle overhangs on the route, which require more concentration but are manageable for those who are careful and focused.
For those without experience, it is recommended to embark on this adventure with experienced hikers or hire local guides who are familiar with the terrain.
